FOSTERING WORKPLACE HARMONY IN SMALL BUSINESSES

Harmony is best understood by listening to a band when they get on stage and start to play their musical instruments. Initially, musical instruments will be out of tune and the sound that comes out is very unpleasant. When finally tuned, audiences enjoy melodious pieces of music; jam after jam and everybody gets on the dance floor and dance. A major success key factor for any band is therefore to avoid discord.

A classic parallel is how at the workplace, discord also exists. This happens when organizational members do not agree. Disagreement need not be verbally registered. Actually, the worst form of disagreement at the workplace is when some employees pretend to agree yet their behaviours demonstrate something totally different. All this is the essence of workplace harmony.

Harmony is of paramount importance for optimum performance. Yet, how to nurture it sustainabily is a lot easier said than done. This leads me to ask you: How harmonious is your workplace> Remember, the absence of conflict does not mean the presence of harmony.

Driven by the passion of ensuring human capital leads to optimum performance, I have authored an EBook – Workplace Harmony In Small Businesses: An Academic and Practical Guide. I am therefore, commending this book to you so you can read it. You will benefit from the unique and yet very easy steps which you can take to foster workplace harmony in your organization.

Small businesses are without doubt key drivers for socio-economic development, and for this reason, I wrote this book with small firms in mind.

Consequently, the key objectives of this book are:

First, to equip small business owner managers, academics, consultants and other SME key stakeholders with practical knowledge that they can take to successfully foster workplace harmony. The practical knowledge is given in the form of practical steps and guides.

Second, to enlighten academic community in respect of workplace harmony as an independent construct that is quite different from workplace conflict. In this regard, a major argument in this book is that the absence of workplace conflict does not imply the prevalence of workplace harmony.

This book is significant in several ways. It addresses a very important issue of workplace harmony, which is central to enhanced productivity of both the employees and the business.

The 21st century workplace continues to be complex and dynamic with key employment issues such as workforce diversity and inclusion, human-machine work roles, changing nature of work, changing mode of work (remote, face to face, flexibility), employment contracts (permanent, contract, fixed), cyber security amongst several others causing serious workplace harmony issues. Ultimately, where there is disharmony,  productivity stands threatened.

Yet, globally, workplace harmony as an independent concept or construct is largely dwarfed or circumvented as preference is given to workplace conflict. The argument raised is that the absence of workplace conflict represents workplace harmony, but this is not always the case, given parties to the employment relationship can fake or pretend being in harmony. This is called superficial harmony.

This book therefore, fills a very important knowledge gap given significant scarcity of literature that focuses on workplace harmony.

Furthermore, the book takes an original and creative approach of writing for two huge communities, that is, the academia and the small business community. In this regard, through its academic guide section and its practical guide section, it is a very rare book to come across in the market, providing a 2 in 1 comprehensive benefit.

Specifically, by developing an Integrated Model for Workplace Harmony (IMoWH) in small businesses, the book enlightens academia in respect of the delicate task of fostering workplace harmony.

Further, the book ropes in entrepreneurial learning as an investigative lens, a perspective very much overlooked in mainline HRM and industrial relations discourse. Including entrepreneurial learning enriches the workplace harmony debate and casts greater insights into how small business owner managers are able to navigate the social exchange and psychological contract driven employment relationship.

As for small businesses, they stand to benefit from numerous practical steps and guides that clearly show them how they can go about fostering workplace harmony in their businesses.
